From the Music Director
Music is the vernacular of the human soul.
— Geoffrey Latham
Harmonious Greetings, and Happy New Year!
I hope that you were one of those present to enjoy the exciting Treasures of Emmanuel presentation. As I had predicted it was an evening of terrific music, lots of laughs, and the opportunity to enjoy the diverse array of talents among us. In addition to listening to and being told more about the unusual Nyckleharpe by Kristi Johnson, the other instrumentalists and vocalists deserve our continuing applause. In the category of “Did You Know?”, the Emmanuel Ringers, heard often in our worship services (and who always try to steal the “Treasures” show!), would possibly not be in existence were it not for the generosity of Susan and John Drumm. They purchased the initial set of handbells for our music ministry eight or nine years ago. Without a doubt, for all these years, to borrow a phrase, they are “a gift that has kept on giving”.
Now, with Ash Wednesday already here, the focus turns to the season of and music for Lent and Easter. The annual Cantata for the season will take place on Palm Sunday, March 16, at the 11:00 service.
Please note that there continues to be a serious need for choral singers and bell ringers. The numbers, as stated in previous columns, are low enough to cause concern. Participants of all ages, including high school and college students are urged to join. Recent and long-time members of Emmanuel are again urged to consider joining yourself. And encourage any acquaintances you know, member or not, to put their talent to good use by becoming involved.
Although there are no special concerts scheduled for this month at Emmanuel, I invite you and your friends to take a ride out to McLean’s lovely Alden Theatre where I will conduct a pre-Valentine’s concert by The McLean Symphony on February 9. The program, titled “Love on the Rocks”, will feature the phenomenal cabaret singer, Beverly Cosham, performing with her trio. Having recently returned from a successful European tour, she played to a standing room only audience at Washington’s Blues Alley. A Champagne and Chocolate Reception will follow the concert. For details, call the Symphony hotline, 703.991.7197, or go to the website: www.mclean-symphony.org.
We have been fortunate to have talented members of the Symphony assist in our various musical presentations here. Take advantage of this and other opportunities to support their ongoing activities.
The next in the series of Concerts At Emmanuel is scheduled for mid-April. More on that soon.
Until next time, I am
Faithfully yours,
Dingwall Fleary
