INTERFAITH STUDY CONTINUES ON SUNDAY 8 JANUARY

On Sunday, 8 January, at 7 p.m. at Emmanuel, Rabbi Emeritus and Pastor Lookingbill will continue the Interfaith study that really began last year and continued in December. We will be sharing our traditional views of our religious life and reflecting on the great themes of the Torah, the “law” in the Old Testament, and the place of prophecy. Who is a true prophet, and how do you tell a false prophet? From our ongoing study of Deuteronomy and the reform movement that Jesus’ ministry represented, this question of true and false prophets is especially appropriate this winter.

Plan to join us at 7 p.m. at Emmanuel on Sunday evening in the Fellowship Hall. We have decided to change our meeting day from Thursday to Sunday this year, allowing more of our members who have had conflicts on Thursday to join us. Bring along friends who are curious about our shared traditions and our separate development. If you’ve not been able to join us for our earlier meetings, do not hesitate to come. This is a new year and a new topic for our religious journeys.

PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 24 JANUARY AT 7:30 P.M.

Emmanuel will host this year’s Prayer for Christian Unity with Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday 24 January at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This is an annual worship service with the clergy and members of Our Lady of Mercy that engages us in mutual prayer for our Christian Churches and the ministry we share in the name of Christ. In this simple prayer service we join with our Christian brothers and sisters to remind us of our common faith in Jesus and our determination to share that faith through all the differences we know that keep us apart.

As is our custom for these past several years, when we meet at Emmanuel there will be a Roman Catholic preacher, as there was a Lutheran professor last year at Our Lady of Mercy. This is a singular way that we can continue our dedication to the directive that Jesus gave his disciples in the Gospel of John: That they may all be One. Bring your neighbors who are Roman Catholic as well as Lutheran to share this annual blessing.
