Adult Programs

The Sunday Morning Adult Forum provides the opportunity to discuss freely in a Christian context a variety of issues and topics of interest. You are invited to express and share your concerns, thoughts, and insights on local and world issues as well as ethical and moral ones. Join Floyd Swanson and Mae Scanlan at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning for a lively, far-ranging discussion of ideas, views, concerns, news events, books, articles, cartoons, and anything you feel influences our lives as Christians.

The Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study invites you to join them in the Parlor at 10:00 a.m. We will study prayer in the Bible by looking at ten different prayers that are taught in the Bible. We will also use a text as a study guide. Bring your Bibles, or pick one up from the shelves in the Parlor and come join us. Ginger Boone will lead the group. Further information may be obtained by calling the church office at 301-365-5733.

Wednesday Morning Bible Studies, led by Pastor Lookingbill, begin at 10:30 AM and are followed by a brown bag luncheon -- bring your sandwich! Typically one book from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament are studied each year. Following the spring study of the Second letter to the Corinthians, Pr. Lookingbill began a study of Genesis in September. We are finishing up the study of Genesis in May with the Joseph cycle.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE ENCOUNTER STUDIES MATTHEW

The Wednesday morning Bible Encounter continues at 10:30 a.m. in the Christian Education room with Pr. Lookingbill. We are currently fascinated with the Gospel of Matthew, the first and most Jewish of the Gospels in the New Testament. Our recent visit to Israel prompts even more questions and insights from the Gospel of Matthew as it relates to our faith today.

The Gospels are the core witness to Jesus and his ministry, how he taught and what was most important to him and the early Church. Matthew is the first of the synoptic (similar) Gospels in the Bible New Testament and carries the most references to the Old Testament prophecies. Matthew is filled with stories and teachings that have become the bedrock of our Christian faith.

Join us on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. for the study and plan to stay for lunch at noon. Desserts are provided by the members of the group and accompany the lunch you bring along for yourself. Friends of the congregation are also invited to join us for our study and fellowship.

Wednesday Evening Studies are led by Pastor Lookingbill and usually feature a close look at a book chosen for the particular multiple-week study. The evenings begin with a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m., following the study discussion at 7:30 p.m.

THE WEDNESDAY EVENING STUDY GROUP

Our study begun in December is considering a current book in the field of Religion and Science with selections by Francis Collins, current Director of the National Institutes of Health. The book is Belief: Readings on the Reason for Faith. The readings range from classical arguments to the “irrationality of Atheism,” with much more in between. We continue to have a dialogue in our society between the value of religious experience and the importance of scientific study, and these articles contribute to a larger understanding of those who have thought and written about belief and measurability.

Please join Pr. Lookingbill and the group for supper at 6:30 in the Fellowship Hall and for our stimulating discussion in the Christian Education room of the Church beginning at 7:30. Bring along friends who will add to our insightful and challenging evenings.

Women's Opportunity for Prayer and Study:

Anyone interested in praying together on Friday mornings (men welcome too!) are invited to join us from 8:00-8:30.

Women's Bible Study:

The Women’s Bible Study for 2011 began in September and is held the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the church. We are currently studying the book of Ephesians. Please feel free to join us as you can.

Interfaith Study Programs offer additional opportunities for discussion of shared faith.
