Adult Programs The Sunday Morning Adult Forum provides the opportunity to discuss freely in a Christian context a variety of issues and topics of interest. You are invited to express and share your concerns, thoughts, and insights on local and world issues as well as ethical and moral ones. Join Floyd Swanson and Mae Scanlan at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning for a lively, far-ranging discussion of ideas, views, concerns, news events, books, articles, cartoons, and anything you feel influences our lives as Christians. The Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study invites you to join them in the Parlor at 10:00 a.m. We are exploring the Book of Faith, the ELCA's new Bible study program. It is a class effort working through the Book of Faith recommended by the Bishop of the ELCA in a recent issue of the Lutheran. Bring your Bibles, or pick one up from the shelves in the Parlor. Kristi Johnson and Diane Swenson lead the group. Further information may be obtained by calling the church office at 301-365-5733. Monthly Bible Discussions and Lunch with Pastor Lookingbill: The ELCA is challenging all Lutheran congregations to spend more time in Bible study. In response, Pastor Lookingbill invites members and friends to meet once a month, following the 11 am Sunday morning service, for lunch and a discussion of the day's Old and New Testament lessons. Contact the church office at info@elcbethesda.org or 301-365-5733 to find out about the next session. Wednesday Morning Bible Studies, led by Pastor Lookingbill, begin at 10:30 AM and are followed by a brown bag luncheon. Typically one book from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament are studied each year. The Wednesday morning Bible Encounter is studying Isaiah in selected chapters. Please plan to join Pastor Lookingbill and the group for potluck lunch and study and conversation. For details, call the church office at 301-365-5733. Wednesday Evening Studies are led by Pastor Lookingbill and usually feature a close look at a book chosen for the particular multiple-week study. The evenings begin with a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m., following the study discussion at 7:30 p.m.. In the fall of 2008, we are participating in a special video program on Science and Religion. This program, sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation, features a series of videos hosted by Francis S. Collins, the Director of the Human Genome Project, in which various scientists and seminary professors consider questions about God and Science. The October 22nd evening study focused on the book “The Measure of America—American Human Development Report 2008-2009." The co-author, Sarah Burd-Sharps, daughter-in-law of our own Sybilla Sharps, was informative, engaging and thoroughly delightful in helping us better understand how a range of measures of income, health and education applied to developed countries frequently show the USA often lagging behind. Ms. Burd-Sharps' experience with the United Nations and her subsequent research contributing to the book were most welcome, providing an enlightening framework of factual data for all of us in our political and advocacy efforts. Please consider joining us for similarly engaging discussions. Women's Opportunity for Prayer and Study: Anyone interested in praying together on Friday mornings (men welcome too!) are invited to join us from 8:00-8:30. Women's Bible Study: Kristi Johnson and Diane Swenson are leading this monthly Bible study, usually held the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm at the church. This fall we are studying the book of Acts with our use of The Acts of the Apostles by William Barclay. Come join us as we learn more about the growth of the Early Church. Our group of intrepid learners hopes to add to their number. Please bring your Bible, and your inquiring mind! Interfaith Study Programs offer additional opportunities for discussion of shared faith.
